習志野市には谷津干潟が、オーストラリアの東海岸にあるブリスベン市にはブーンドル湿地があり、両湿地ともラムサール条約登録湿地で、渡り鳥のシギ・チドリ類が行き来しています。このような縁から、「湿地の保全と渡り鳥の保護を協力して行う」ために、両市は1998年2月に湿地提携をしました。以来、行政、観察センター、市民、子どもたち、自然保護団体などがお互いに両市を訪問すると共に、湿地や鳥の情報交換などを行っています。

Both Yatsu Higata Tidal Flats of Narashino, Japan and Moreton Bay, Brisbane (incorporating Boondall Wetlands) were listed under the Ramsar convention on wetlands of international importance in 1993. Understanding importance of conservation of wetlands and protection of migratory birds, and with the same migratory birds visiting each wetland, the Affiliation Agreement between the two cities was signed in February 1998. Since then many from both communities have participated in “wetland exchange” through visits and information exchange.
